About AFT Local 1904:

The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Local 1904 is the Union representing Montclair State University Faculty, Professional Staff and Librarians. Our objectives are to:

Scholarship History:

In 1996, the members of AFT Local 1904 established the Scholarship Endowment Fund as an expression of esteem and respect for James P. Keenen III, Joseph T. Moore, Anita E. Uhia, and Connie Waller. We honor their service to the University as founders and leaders of AFT Local 1904, and their distinguished intellectual and teaching careers. We also honor Catherine A. Becker who served as President of the Local for 25 years. Awards made by the Fund are known as Becker/Keenen/Moore/Uhia/Waller Scholarships and award recipients are known as Becker/Keenen/Moore/Uhia/Waller Scholars.

The Fund is dedicated to help full-time undergraduate students enrolled at least one semester at Montclair State University prior to the application date and who demonstrate a significant economic need for their enrollment or otherwise to pursue their studies in a recognized University program.

One of the six scholarships is awarded in honor of Catherine A. Becker's sister, Ellen Kerns Nunn. Ellen, an MSU alumna, was a single working parent. This specific award is designated for a single parent who is working (full- or part-time) while pursuing an undergraduate education. If no one applies in this category, or if an applicant for this specific award does not meet the other criteria, the scholarship will revert to the general pool.

Recipient Eligibility:

The scholarship is limited to students who:
a. are full time undergraduate students at Montclair State University at the time the award payment is made;
b. are not on academic or disciplinary suspension or probation;
c. in whole or in part depend on their own work for the economic resources for their enrollment at Montclair State University.

Criteria for Selection:

Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of:
a. the online essay describing the student’s need, and the role of higher education in the student’s life; and
b. an online recommendation from a currently employed MSU faculty member, professional staff member, or librarian.
